How to: Depot Lipstick

Depot: Taking a product from its original packaging and putting it into another container.  I showed you how to depot eyeshadows, now I’m going to show you how to do the same thing to your lipsticks!  As a makeup artist, it’s very annoying (and not very time effective) to dig around your kit for the lipstick you want to use.  This method is also useful for everyday use, it allows you carry around more lip colors in your purse because it takes up less space!

Start off by selecting a container. There are several different containers you can use, I chose to use the circular stackable ones because I can customize and organize by color very easily.  Just go to the craft store and see what’s available to you (mine were $2.99 from Hobby Lobby, in the bead section).

Start off by disinfecting all of your implements.  Just take a cotton ball and some isopropyl alcohol and wipe down your container, stainless steel spoon, and knife.

Fully extend the lipstick you wish to depot and slice at the base, placing the product into the stainless steel spoon.

Take the tip of the knife and scoop out the remaining product in the lipstick tube (there’s usually quite a bit still left!).

It will end up looking something like this.

Hold the spoon over a candle for approximately 60 seconds.  Each lipstick formula is different, so there isn’t a set time that works for every lipstick.  Make sure to hold the other end of the spoon with something that is heat-resistant (like a pot holder).   Be sure not to get too close the flame or hold it there for too long.  If the lipstick temperature reaches a boiling point, it will change the formula.

Here is what you don’t want to see, bubbling! I accidentally let this one get too hot.

You want to see this.

Fully melted (or, close enough)

Pour lipstick into desired container.  There will be some left of the spoon, you can reheat it over the candle to salvage a few extra drops.  But unfortunately, you will be losing some product.

For the label, peel the label off the lipstick (if it’s not budging, use a cotton swab with baby oil to help break up the adhesive).  In this case, I cut off the part that I wanted to use (lipstick name and brand).  Apply to desired container and put a piece of tape over it to secure its placement.

And you’re done!  To use, simply scoop out a little bit of product with a makeup spatula.  For personal use, just apply with a lip brush or your finger.

Such a space saver!

What do you think of this method?  Will you be depotting any of your lipsticks?

Drink water. Wear SPF.
